Brew: Warlock

Brewery: Southern Tier Brewing Company

Style: Imperial Stout brewed with Pumpkin

ABV: 8.6%

Tasting Notes: This brew was one of the most exciting new beers to come out of my home town brewery in a while for me. From my understanding this brew is a spin on STBC’s Seasonal fan favorite Pumking. I’ve always been a sucker for pumpkin flavored brews so naturally having already been a fan of Pumking I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this new rendition. Moving right along, this beer pours exceptionally opaque with just a few hints of dark ruby highlights sneaking through. The head was a billowing two finger high tower of mocha, once that settled down the pumpkin pie aromas that came off this beer were exceptional! There were a ton of great nutmeg and spice notes alongside some rich biscuit accents. The stout aspects came through in the nose in the form of subtle licorice notes with a hint of roasted barley. The sip starts out with the same big malt sweetness I’ve come to expect from a Pumking. Where this brew really starts to distinguish itself is towards the middle when the roasty bitterness meets up with the spice and malts to bring this brew to a very pleasing balance between a solid imperial stout and a classic STBC Pumking. The roast bitterness helps clean the palate up thru to a finish that leaves just a few traces of spice and roast behind.
